Current topics and major advances in medical imaging in Musculoskeletal Imaging Challengers, Head and Neck Imaging, and Nuclear Radiology will be addressed in an intensive two-day program to include didactic lectures by experts in the fields offering in-depth discussion of these rapidly evolving areas. Saturday morning will begin with a General Session preliminarily scheduled to include Dr. Mark Schweitzer who will cover MRI of the elbow, and an Imaging of Spaces talk by Mahmood F. Mafee, MD on "Anatomy of the Temporal Bone, then will continue with breakout sessions. Sunday’s Joint Session with Radiation Oncology is high-lighted by the Isaac Sander’s Honorary Lecture by this year’s honoree David S.K. Lu, MD, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. His preliminary title: Interventional Oncology: The Time Has Come. Dr. Lu's talk will be followed by a short business meeting, then by Michael Brant-Zawadzki, MD speaking on "Patient-Centered Radiology: Use It or Lose It."
The Musculoskeletal Imaging Challenges Track provides a focus on state-of-the art and cutting-edge advances in MRI, including procedures with emphasis on pre- and post surgery imaging. Speakers include Mark E. Schweitzer, MD, NYU School of Medicine, whose interests include MRI and CT imaging for sports medicine, arthritis, and metabolic bone diseases; David W. Stoller, MD, Marin Radiology and National Orthopedic Imaging Associates, who served as the MSK radiologist for the 1992 Summer Olympic Games and is a consultant to collegiate and professional sports teams, Olympic athletes and the San Francisco ballet and is recognized as a world authority on MSK MRI; and Kenneth A. Buckwalter, MD, IUPUI School of Medicine, whose interests include biomedical research focusing on arthritis, bone and joint disease in the older population, bone and joint CT, MRI and Arthrography, and MDCT and MR imaging of orthopedic hardware; and George Nomikos, MD, NYU School of Medicine, whose interests are knee meniscus imaging and the evaluation of bone tumors with MRI and correlation with surgical and gross pathological findings. LARS CEC members who recently heard him speak at the Summer Musculoskeletal Radiology Practicum in Jackson Hole, Wyoming were extremely impressed with the scope of the material included in his presentation
The Head and Neck Imaging Track incorporates a strong curriculum covering anatomy, pathology and pitfalls with an emphasis on cutting-edge procedures for pre- and post treatment imaging. Six world class researchers and educators, Patricia Hudgins, MD, Emory University Hospital; William W.M. Lo, MD, FACR; Mahmood Mafee, MD, recently moved to the University of California San Diego Medical Center; Charles J. Schatz, MD, Beverly Tower Wilshire Advanced Imaging, Wendy R.K. Smoker, MD, FACR of the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics; and Richard H. Wiggins, III, MD of Huntsman Cancer Institute of the University of Utah. Drs. Mafee, Hudgins, Schatz, and Smoker are past presidents of the ASHNR. Drs. Mafee and Lo are ASHNR Gold Medal Recipients for 2006 and 2007 respectively.
The one-day, (Saturday) Nuclear Medicine Track will include updates in PET and SPECT CT, incorporating recent news on new technology and applications. Lecturers include Dr. Schweitzer; Josef Machac, MD, Director of the Clinical PET Center and Nuclear Medicine at Mt. Sinai and past president of the Cardiovascular Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine; and Daniel Silverman, MD, PhD, Head, Neuronuclear Imaging Section and Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, David Geffen School of Medicine of UCLA, currently involved in research to explore the interactions and neurologic bases of memory, mood, and clinical disorders in the human brain, and the development of noninvasive methodologies with which to optimize management of breast and other cancers with PET brain imaging.
This program is Co-Chaired by George J. So, MD, MSE, Radiology Program Chairman and Head and Neck Imaging Track Organizer, and Elizabeth O. Westfall, MD, MSK Challengers and Nuclear Track Organizer. Members of the planning committee include Margaret H. Lee, MD, Michelle L. Melany, MD, Jose S. Tandoc, MD, and Jon M. Foran, MD.
Dr. So holds a BSEE, Electrical Engineering and BSE, Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan, and an MSE in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. His MD is from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology and fellowships in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and in Neuroradiology at UCLA. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology at UCLA Medical Center and holds hospital appointments at both Torrance Memorial Medical Center and UCLA Center for Health Sciences. Dr. So is responsible for the inception of the popular LARS-sponsored Radiology Classics, originally conceived of as a review program for residents and fellows preparing for oral boards, but growing in popularity with practicing physicians who want a review in the eleven radiological modalities. He is the Senior Diagnostic Representative of the LARS Continuing Education Committee, a member of the LARS Board of Directors, Councilor, American College of Radiology, and member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the American Society of Neuroradiology and the Radiological Society of North America.
Dr. Westfall received her BA from Princeton University in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and her MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She completed a Diagnostic Radiology residency at USC where she served as Chief Resident. She subsequently completed a fellowship in MRI and Musculoskeletal Radiology at USC. She is a board-certified radiologist and currently is the Vice Chair of the Department of Radiology at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ. She also maintains hospital privileges at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ; at Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, CA and at USC where she is a volunteer faculty member in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Westfall is the Diagnostic Representative of the LARS Continuing Education Committee. She also is the President of the USC radiology alumni and faculty organization (USC Society of Graduate Radiologists and Faculty). She serves as an Outside Medical Consultant for the Arizona Medical Board reviewing radiology-related complaints registered with the Arizona Medical Board. She is a member of the American College of Radiology, The American Roentgen Ray Society and The Radiology Society of North America.
